Deaf Child Worldwide - Webinar Series: Exploring Unheard Children Report

Webinar

Deaf Child Worldwide is hosting a series of webinars that bring together NGOs, academics, professionals and policy makers to explore the themes in their new Unheard Children report

Webinar #1 - Language and Communication

Tuesday 30 March 2021

In exploring Language and Communication access for deaf children in low income communities, we will hear from Lorraine Wapling, an expert in early childhood language development, and a personal story from Dr Joyce Nalugya, a parent of a deaf child in Uganda, who went on to found a national organisation connecting and advocating for deaf children and their families.

Webinar #2 - Families

Tuesday 11 May

For deaf children in the developing world who often grow up
in poverty, a parent or family member is their lifeline to a better future. Join us to hear from speakers from Bolivia and India about what works in supporting the families of deaf children.

Webinar#3 - Communities

Tuesday 22 June

Most people we support have never encountered deafness before. Anything people do know about deafness is often clouded by negative cultural attitudes and outdated myths. Even professionals such as doctors, nurses, teachers, police, religious and community leaders have little knowledge of the subject.

Join us to hear from speakers from Kenya and India about ways in which the wider community can be engaged and play a critical role in changing negative attitudes to deafness.

Webinar #4 - Education

Thursday 2 September 2021

Most deaf children in developing countries don’t go to school or they drop out early. Very few make it to secondary school, let
alone further education. Of those deaf children who do reach the classroom, many will never get a good education. And for most children during the pandemic, deaf or hearing, schools have been closed on and off for more than a year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Join us to find out more about education for deaf children in low income communities, during and before the pandemic, and what needs to happen to build a truly inclusive accessible system for them in the future.

Webinar #5 - Independence

Thursday 21 October 2021, 2pm - 3:30pm BST

Preparing for adulthood in developing countries where there is little understanding of deafness, and where unemployment is extremely high, means deaf young people face huge barriers to achieving independence.

Join us to understand how deaf teenagers and young people can develop the self-esteem, resilience and skills to be part
of community life, develop healthy relationships and find meaningful employment.
