What We Do

The Inclusive Education Initiative (IEI) is a Multi Donor Trust Fund which aims to improve the educational participation and learning outcomes of children with disabilities.

To achieve this, the IEI focuses on: (1) enhancing stakeholder capacity and service delivery at the country level; (2) improving coordination, collaboration and knowledge sharing; and (3) investing in innovative interventions through three funding windows.

Call for proposals to test and scale innovative interventions that address complex challenges. 

In-Country Interventions

This window invests in resources for interventions in Nepal, Rwanda and Ethiopia for systems strengthening to support educational achievement of students with disabilities. The country-based financing ensures attention to both supply and demand side of the educational ecosystem.

Global Public Goods

The IEI is supporting partners to develop research, evidence and resources to implement inclusive education. The IEI will also collate, disseminate, and coordinate evidence and resources to provide a quality assured global knowledge hub and a community of practice on inclusive education.

Community of Practice (COP) and Knowledge Portal

This COP and knowledge portal support global and regional communities on the multifaceted components of an inclusive education system. It will also identify knowledge gaps and build a dedicated knowledge hub that will serve as a repository, networking resource, and source of new partnerships.

Measuring inclusive teaching practices - TEACH

TEACH captures the quality of teaching practices in primary school classrooms. The IEI is funding efforts to ensure the tool is utilized to capture the use of inclusive teaching practices in the classroom. This will allow education systems to consider what additional support teachers need to provide quality learning experiences for all students, including for learners with disabilities.

UNICEF-IEI Data on Disability Inclusive Education Project

This work will address key barriers and bottlenecks in disability data collection, analysis and management. Global goods will include Global Report on Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) analysis, training on data analysis on Child Functioning Module (CFM), incorporating the CFM into Education Management Information System (EMIS) & school-based surveys and the Inclusive Education Household Survey module rollout.

Technical Deep Dives and Landscape Reviews

This technical work will produce knowledge and understanding on key barriers, solutions and opportunities for inclusive education for children with disabilities in low-and middle-income countries. The IEI is commissioning technical deep dives and reviews on:(1) digital technologies for disability-inclusive education; (2) childhood disability screening and identification; (3) models on inclusive education, and (4) South Asia-Africa Research Exchange.

Innovation Funding

Innovation Funding

The IEI Innovations Pillar seeks to contribute to the global knowledge base on catalytic interventions with the potential to transform educational or social systems and practices for improved educational participation and learning outcomes for children with disabilities.

The IEI is inviting expressions of interest (EOI) in submitting proposals for innovative interventions with the potential to transform educational practices and support for children with disabilities.

This is a global call and focuses on three thematic areas.

  1. ​Inclusive learning assessment practices and utilizing principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Proposals that look for innovative ways to enhance understanding of inclusive learning assessments for children with disabilities with or without the support of educational technology;

  2. Inclusive teaching practices: Proposals that aim to build a better understanding and improvements in strategies, interventions, and tools that would contribute to inclusive teaching practices to respond to needs of children with disabilities; and

  3. Social determinants of disability-inclusive education: Proposals that focus on demand side interventions to accelerate family preparedness and capacity to support the successful educational participation and learning of their children with disabilities.
