Count me in! Evidence and Participation to Shape Inclusive Education Policies
Tuesday, 5 July 2022

Global discussions about accelerating progress towards SDG 4 are needed. Key topics of data disaggregation and of intersectionality connect with SDGs 5 and 17. Lack of reliable, disaggregated data, about out of school children and youth or attending inclusive schools inhibits progress towards Agenda 2030. Many countries underestimate the number of children with disabilities leading to their invisibility in policies resulting in limited responses to fulfilling their rights, including education.  Experiences and knowledge about ensuring quality, equity and inclusion much needed. Policymakers need to develop comprehensive inclusive education systems that respond to the intersecting and multiple discriminating factors experienced by different individuals and groups and avoid segregation.

Good policies require informed, robust disaggregated data and research. Meaningful participation with relevant stakeholders including organisations of persons with disabilities (OPDs), parent’s organisations, teachers etc. are crucial throughout this process.  There are increasing examples of EMIS collecting data on disability with many countries committed to using the Washington Group Questions.
The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted educational inequities in education. Efforts made now to produce quality evidence can ensure that education systems are better equipped to face future educational crises.

Supporting young children with disabilities in humanitarian settings
Tuesday, 28 June 2022

The rapid growth that occurs in the first years of life provides an opportunity to influence and improve developmental outcomes that may impact the entire course of an individual's life. Addressing the developmental needs of children with disabilities during this critical period is essential if they are to survive, flourish, learn, and be empowered.

Recognizing the importance of addressing all children's unique needs and acknowledging the influence of social stigma and misconceptions about disability that may lead to underdeveloped potential and social exclusion, we seek to advocate for and support the inclusion of young children with disabilities in Early Childhood Development in Emergencies programming.

Value for Money: Why Investing in Children with Disabilities is Worth Every Penny

This publication outlines how and why investing in children with disabilities is not only a moral and professional imperative, but it also makes economic sense. Evidence presented in this paper demonstrates that for donors, governments and INGOs to spend Official Development Assistance (ODA) budgets efficiently and effectively, children with disabilities must be considered. The various ways in which the inclusion of children generates economic growth means investing in children with disabilities is worth every penny. Investing in children with disabilities is investing in the next generation!

Global Report on Assistive Technology (GReAT)

The Global Report on Assistive Technology (GReAT) was developed in response to the World Health Assembly resolution WHA71.8 on improving access to assistive technology adopted in May 2018. Guided by an Expert Advisory Group, the WHO and UNICEF have jointly developed this report collaborating with global assistive technology stakeholders. It presents a comprehensive dataset and analysis of the access to assistive technology, drawing the attention of governments and civil society to the need for, and benefit of, assistive technology, including its return on investment. The Report sets out ten recommendations for improving access to assistive technology, which will in turn support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, inclusive Universal Health Coverage, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
